Rules of Magic

Magical essence is an integral part of the continent of Deivalia. Essential in its very creation by the Deities, magic offered them near limitless power. The magical essences that exist in the land is also the core substance that makes up the ethereal energy in Deities. They are essentially living magic. Despite this however, the magical essences of Deivalia still have rules that even magic cannot operate outside of. Since the creation of Deivalia, special crystalline stones called Essence Stones formed throughout the land, especially in areas of high magic concentration. These stones attracted the nearby magical energies to themselves, absorbing the raw power into the stones. When Essence Stones were finally discovered, their true power was immediately recognized.

Magic is present throughout Deivalia, and anyone with knowledge of how to control that essence can tap into the magic that is naturally present around them. Greater spells however required concentrated magic as surrounding magic is almost never enough to power such spells. This was the great discovered value in Essence Stones. The power collected in more ancient stones allowed casters to tap into otherwise unprecedented levels of magical energy, allowing them to cast greater spells.

The more ancient Essence Stones were, the more energy they had time to absorb. Over time these stones begin to gather lesser energy faster as they become accustomed to holding greater power, so even stones that have been used can regenerate their essence over time. To control these energies was simple once the knowledge was attained, but learning the words to control the energies was no easy tasks. Deities are beings of pure magic, or magic given form. Thus, their language controls the flow of the magical energies. Once a caster mastered the Deity's language, he could manipulate the magical energies to his or her will. This discovery led to the exploitation of what would then become the greatest weakness the Deities had ever faced...
